Specialty-engineered metal expansion joints are designed to protect a ship’s exhaust cleaning system (scrubber) and its connected equipment from damage caused by vibration and movement. Typically, one expansion joint is installed at the inlet of the scrubber system and another at the outlet. Multi-ply bellows expansion joints with fixed or floating flanges are generally recommended.
The preferred material for these expansion joints is AL-6XN®, a super-austenitic stainless steel alloy designed for exceptional resistance to seawater and a wide range of highly corrosive environments. This iron-based alloy is readily available and offers a cost-effective alternative to more expensive nickel-based alloys while providing excellent formability, weldability, strength, and corrosion resistance. Although alloys such as Hastelloy® have been used in the past, AL-6XN® has proven to be a superior choice for seawater and other highly corrosive applications. Depending on the application, flow liners and installation gaskets are also available.
