Metal Expansion Joints for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Scrubber Systems

AL-6XN® Alloy

Specialty-engineered metal expansion joints are designed to protect a ship’s exhaust cleaning system, or scrubber, and its connected equipment, as the scrubber system can be susceptible to damage from vibrations and movements.  Typically, one expansion joint is placed at the inlet of the system and another is positioned at the outlet.  Multi-ply bellow expansion joints with fixed or floating flanges are generally recommended.  Most often, the material used for the expansion joint will be the AL-6XN® alloy which is designed to be seawater resistant and highly resistant to a broad range of highly corrosive environments. This “super austenitic” iron-based, stainless alloy is readily available and offers a cost effective alternative to more expensive nickel-based alloys while still offering excellent formability, weldability, strength and corrosion resistance.  In the past, other alloys like Hasteloy® have been

used, but the AL-6XN® has proven to be a superior material for highly corrosive and seawater applications.  Flow liners may be required for certain applications and installation gaskets are also available.
